What is FLEW?
Women facing family breakdown have extensive legal information needs. Women who are recent immigrants, or do not speak English or French, or who live in rural or isolated areas are less likely to be aware of their rights under public family law, and more likely to need information to support their decision-making when facing family issues. Women need to be informed of their legal rights so that they can better understand legal processes, consider their options, and assert their rights. Access to accurate and relevant legal information, while not a substitute for legal representation, is an important first step in this process. Women and their children are often forced to live in poverty when they separate and divorce. They need information about their rights under family law that is culturally appropriate and available. In 2005/06, the provincial government introduced the Family Statute Law Amendment Act. Under the new law, which came into effect on April 30, 2007, all family law arbitrations must follow Canadian law. These changes to the law have given greater urgency for the need to distribute information about women's legal rights and choices and to reach out to isolated and marginalized women.
